USE DATA, BUT
TELL A STORY
EMBEDDING A DATA DRIVEN CULTURE
WE CALL IT
THE STORY CULTURE

"The ability to take data - to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it -that’s going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades."

OUR STORY
What is data storytelling?
Data storytelling is the process of translating data analysis into layman's terms in order to influence a business decision or action. Anyone who can extract the story out of data is a data storyteller.

What do we do?
1. We build data culture. We help organisations to get data-driven using our unique approach called the The Story Culture, which improves the decision making effectiveness.
2. We train data analysts on converting dashboards into storyboards. ( Dashboards don't tell a story, but storyboards do.)
3. We train business leaders and analysts on how to embed The Story Culture to get the best value from your data investments.

So, WHY do we do it?
Because, no one else was doing it even though there was a real need. We all want our business decisions be data driven but there is no framework or proven approach to help us do it effectively. So we built one and called it The Story Culture.
The background story is after working for more than 10 years in the field of business intelligence, I strongly felt the need for a radical change in the way businesses consume data. As a BI team manager I was able to witness how difficult and time consuming it is for senior managers to interpret a data analysis report and still struggle to get the clarity required for decision making. It was frustrating and I had to deal with this inefficiency in the business,so I thought there must be a way to improve the data consumption part as after all consumption is the key purpose of capturing data in the first place. I researched and found the big tech companies are using a successful concept called 'data storytelling' to improve their data consumption and also to influence decision making. So I got trained on data storytelling concepts but had difficulties in applying it in the day to day business as it involved some public speaking, which I wasn't good at. So, I decided to come out of my shell by getting trained on public speaking (which is effectively storytelling) so that I can help to improve the data consumption problem within organisations. Now I am collaborating with various businesses and professionals to train them on data storyboard design and storytelling skills to embed a sustainable data consumption culture.

So the simple story line is, an enthusiastic data guy gets frustrated with the way businesses consume data, so he gets out to learn a better way to do it and heads back to the business world to challenge and disrupt the existing data culture. If you would like to keep up with my story, follow me on twitter @TheDataStoryGuy.

What is our learning so far?
1. Buying a new reporting tool doesn't fix the already existing culture and people issues in your data ecosystem.
2. When senior managers authentically collaborate with data storytellers and make the decision making process transparent to the entire business, a strong data culture gets embedded.
3. Strategically building a data driven culture is complex but not complicated, hence we recommend The Story Culture.

Who do we work with?
1. Organisations looking to embed a data driven culture to successfully evolve in this fast paced gig economy.
2. Data leaders and analysts who are willing to challenge their existing data culture to embed new ways of working.
